School dropout does not happen overnight. It is often preceded by personal, family-related, or school-related challenges that develop gradually over time. To address these realities and jointly explore possible solutions, the Plaidoyer Social of FEDAS Luxembourg organised the second meeting of its Think Tank 0/12 on 30 June, focusing on the prevention of school dropout.

The discussions centred on how to identify early warning signs and provide timely support to students before their difficulties escalate. It quickly became clear that there is no single cause of school dropout. Every situation reflects an individual story and therefore requires a personalised approach.

Using a range of case studies, participants explored how schools, families, social services, and other professionals can work more closely together to provide comprehensive support for young people. Particular emphasis was placed on the importance of early identification of challenges, open communication, and effective coordination among all stakeholders involved.

The discussions also highlighted the wide range of challenges many children and young people face today. Family instability, bullying, emotional distress, mental health issues, and neurodiverse profiles such as ADHD can all have a significant impact on a student's educational journey. At the same time, participants stressed that academic success should not be measured solely by grades or performance. Equal importance should be given to students' well-being and to recognising and nurturing their individual strengths.

The overall objective is to reach and support young people before their challenges develop into situations that may lead to school dropout. The Think Tank aims to identify and develop effective methods and practical approaches to achieve this goal. These include improving the visibility of existing support services, strengthening support for families, enhancing cooperation between schools, parents, and support services, and placing greater emphasis on the social and emotional development of young people. Another key conclusion was that prevention can only succeed if all stakeholders share responsibility and maintain ongoing dialogue and collaboration.

Once again, the Think Tank concluded that preventing school dropout is a shared societal responsibility. Only through close cooperation between schools, families, professionals, and support services can children and young people receive timely guidance and the sustained support they need to succeed in their educational journey.

FEDAS warmly thanks all participants for their commitment, their valuable insights, and their many constructive contributions. The outcomes of this Think Tank will feed into the ongoing work of the Plaidoyer Social and help advance the discussion on effective measures to prevent school dropout, leading to the development of concrete initiatives and a practical toolbox for professionals.
